Getting Started Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the Getting Started guide! New users of OpenPilot and CopterControl can use these pages to learn about the system, progress to their first flight and then on to their first autonomous flight.

It's not practical to have all of the information you need to get started on a single page, so use this page as a starting point that links to detailed information and tutorial videos in other parts of the OpenPilot Project manual.

You can think of this page as the trunk of a tree; occasionally you will need to branch away from this trunk to perform specific tasks, but after you have completed that task, you can return to the trunk and keep climbing higher. With that said, let's get started!

The Path to your First Flight

Just follow these steps to get in the air with the OpenPilot Project.

Step 1: Get an airframe

You will need a rotary or fixed wing airframe. The Example Airframes section of the wiki has plenty of examples if you are looking for inspiration.

Step 2: Install the OpenPilot hardware

You will need to install an OpenPilot board inside your airframe.

Step 3: Install the Ground Control Station

You will then need to install the Ground Control Station (GCS) so you can configure your system.

The GCS is used both to configure your hardware and as an interface with the aircraft during your flight. All OpenPilot products use the same GCS.

Step 4: Run some preflight tests, then make your first flight!
